What do you think of paying road taxes based on the time of day you drive (rush hour, etc) and the roads you drive (highway, city street, etc)?

Battelle Memorial Institute is working on a device that could be used to calculate the tax based on when and where you drive. This is becoming more and more important since people are trying to drive less as gas prices go up and since hybrids use less gas and electric cars use no gas.

The idea mentioned at the end of the video (no longer online) about the device monitoring your driving habits was a bit big-brotherish but some insurance companies are already doing something similar to this. It would be interesting if you could take your “Driving Score” to your insurance agent and ask for ‘good driver discount’.
