What is SR22 Insurance coverage?
Often an SR22 is called a certificate of financial responsibility (CFR) filing. Having an SR-22 form on file merely means you are fulfilling the state’s minimum automobile insurance requirements.
If you let your SR-22 insurance coverage lapse, your insurance provider is required to alert the state with a SR-26 form and if you go for a time without the SR 22, you might have to pay a fine to get back your license once you get a brand-new SR 22.
Is an SR22 considered auto insurance?
An SR22 is evidence you have cars or truck insurance. Kind of like the Proof of Insurance Card you would present to a police if you were pulled over but the SR 22 form is filed with the Department of Licensing (DOL).
Having an SR-22 is merely proof you are meeting the DOL’s minimum car insurance requirements and is just a rider on your vehicle insurance . Your insurance provider is certifying to the DOL that you have liability insurance in force with them and they are required to inform the DOL if your insurance coverage lapses.
I Don’t Own an Automobile– Can I Still Get an SR22?
Yes, you can get an SR 22 even if you do not have an auto. If the Department of Licensing (DOL) requires you have an SR 22 to keep your drivers license, we can help even if you don’t own an automobile.
You can get what is called a Broad Form Insurance policy, or more commonly “Drivers License Insurance”.
A BroadForm policy covers you when you are driving almost any car, owned or non-owned.
There are downsides to insuring your license. Make certain to speak to one of our experienced insurance representatives when making this important choice.

Can My Existing Agent File My SR-22?
Your existing insurance company can most likely attach an SR-22 to your insurance plan yet this may create issues for you. Many insurance providers consider themselves “preferred” and so do not want to cover people who need an SR 22. They might jack up your rates significantly or even terminate your policy at renewal when they learn you need an SR-22.
Can I get an SR 22 from a different insurance provider?
Yes, you can have a different insurance company file your SR22 with the DOL and not alert your current insurance company. If they do not check your driving history, and unless you had a crash they most likely will not, you probably can keep your preferred vehicle insurance rates.
If you do not intend to tell your existing insurance agent about your need for an SR22, Mid-Columbia Insurance can offer a basic insurance policy on your driver’s license (called Broad Form) with the SR 22 so you can keep your existing “preferred” insurance coverage on your cars and also have an SR-22 on your license.
Just How Much Is SR 22 Insurance in Bainbridge Island?
The average price of SR-22 insurance coverage should be less than $5 per month when included in a regular auto insurance policy since the majority of insurance companies just charge about $25 per 6 month policy term for an SR 22 filing. This is just the charge the insurance provider charges to manage the paperwork required by the state to notify them that you have an SR22 filing. If your insurer charges more, you might want to get a new quote and we would love to help!
Why, then, does SR-22 insurance coverage seem so pricey? An SR22 is simply a rider on your regular vehicle insurance policy. If it is expensive, it is because the vehicle insurance rate is based upon your driving record. Did you get a ticket for driving under the influence? Numerous traffic tickets? Involved in a crash? Been without insurance? Obviously something took place to trigger you to require the SR22 and this is what causes your insurance to be higher than others.
So, how much does SR-22 insurance cost? SR22 insurance is inexpensive. It is your driving record that is not.
How Long Am I Required to Have An SR22?
Generally you have to have an SR22 for Three years however it could well be more or less depending on the judge and your situation.
The most effective way to figure out how long you will really need to have an SR22 is to call the Department of Licensing directly and ask them.

If your SR 22 insurance coverage cancels while an SR 22 is still required, the state will certainly suspend your license till you get an SR22 filed once more and you might be required to pay the reinstatement fees once again in order to get your license back.
When your SR22 terminates, the insurance company is required to submit an SR 26 with the Department of Licensing to inform them that you no longer have active insurance.
