#AccidentsHappen – You think your foot is on the brake. Car starts to go forward. You press on the brake a little bit harder. Before you know it you are back inside the store.
The Kennewick Police Department reported on Sunday that the driver of a Cadillac mistakenly pressed the gas pedal instead of the brake, leaping the parking stop and crashing through the window into the popular Minit-Mart on the corner of 27th and Olympia next to Yoke’s in Kennewick.
Luckily no one was injured in the accident but the shelving and merchandise in that section of the store were not so lucky. As at least one person on Facebook commented, “at least the beer cooler survived”.
Speaking of beer, the police attribute the accident to “driver error” and that no alcohol or other substances are suspected.
You Don’t Need Insurance… Until You Do
Property Damage Liability
Washington state only requires a car owner to carry $10,000 property damage coverage. What do you think it will cost to fix the damage? Even if no major structural damage was done, the costs to repair both the inside and outside of the building could easily exceed this. If it does, then the owner of the car will be responsible for any damages over the amount the insurance company pays.
Just the building? No. The business will most likely have to remain closed while its being repaired. Who pays for the lost income due to the building being closed? You guessed it. Still think $10,000 is plenty?
Bodily Injury Liability
Luckily in this incident no one was in that section of the store so nobody was injured. If they had been, how much bodily injury liability coverage do you carry and how many days would that cover for someone to have surgery and recuperate in the hospital? What if it was more than one person?
Finally, the Cadillac needs to be repaired. This is the coverage most people worry about but is your lowest exposure. If you have collision coverage you probably are going to have to fork out $500 to get your car fixed. Sometimes a young driver will complain that the insurance is more than their car payment. I try to explain to them that the car is the insurance companies least worry.
The Coverage You Want… At a Price You Can Afford
Make sure you have enough liability coverage. Do you really want to mortgage your home or have your wages garnished to pay for an accident because you did not carry enough insurance?
Without collision coverage you are only out the cost of repairing or replacing the car. Without enough (or any) liability insurance you could lose 20% of your wages for years to come.
Call your agent and ask them how much it would be to double your liability coverage. Might be less than one fancy coffee drink a month. That is a small price to pay for peace of mind. And you can be glad if you never have to use it.
If you don’t have an agent (or have cartoon character at an 800#), we would love to discuss your coverage with you! There is a good reason to have a professional, licensed, Washington insurance agent who can help you get the coverage you want, at a price you can afford.
