National General SmartDrive

Perfect for Parents and Teen Drivers

Being a new driver can be exciting and scary for both the new driver and their parents. With National General’s new SmartDrive Program both parents and teenagers can feel a little safer and parents can ensure that their teens are practicing safe driving habits.
Here are some of the benefits:

  • See driver’s monthly summaries
  • See driver’s trip times
  • See driver’s mileage, location, and driving events

How Does The SmartDrive Program Work?

There is no need to install any special equipment, instead simply install the Routely Report app on your smartphone to get started. The app will run in the background and utilize the smartphone’s sensors to automatically capture the following information during your trip:

  • Phone Handling – Phone use can distract you and take your mind off the road.
  • Speeding over 80 mph – Studies show the safest speeds are 80 mph and below.
  • Sudden Braking – When your speed is greatly reduced in a short amount of time.

You can use the app to view your own recent trips and see how safely you drove. This immediate feedback can have a powerful effect on your behavior while behind the wheel.

SmartDrive Requirements

If you go 30 consecutive days without logging a trip then you may have the participation discount removed. You can also have the discount removed if you fail to log at least 10 trips in the policy term.

At the first policy renewal after activation, the company should have enough data to generate a predictive score which will be used to adjust your renewal rate to more accurately reflect your actual driving behavior. This score will be applied to future renewals unless the company elects to collect additional driving data which can then be used to develop a new score.

The company requires at least 30 days of driving and approximately 125 trips to collect the data needed to calculate your driving score and apply it at the next renewal. Note that the driving score could potentially add a surcharge to the renewal rate based on your driving habits, but most often it gives a discount.

Can You Opt Out of SmartDrive?

Yes, you can opt out of the SmartDrive program. If you opt out within 30 days of signing up for the program, National General will simply remove the participation discount and not use any data or score generated in that time at the subsequent renewal.

If you opt out after 30 days, however, any data collected up to that point will remain available to the company for SmartDrive scoring purposes. If a valid SmartDrive score can be generated from the retained data, this score may be used to rate in the future.

SmartDrive combines information from your driving behavior with an overall profile that is used to calculate your performance rating score. The information collected includes:

  • Distracted driving due to phone handling
  • Hard and extreme braking
  • Speeds at or above 80 mph
  • Driving time of day

Why can’t I view older trips I have taken?

The Routely app only stores a limited number of past trips on your phone. Your trip cache clears older trips in order to minimize impact to your phone’s storage space.

What if I wasn’t the driver?

If a trip has you tagged as the driver, don’t worry. You can change the tag after your trip. By default, you are always tagged as the driver. If you were not the driver, simply tap the car button to change the tag of your trip.

What type of phones work with SmartDrive?

The Routely App will support most Apple and Android smartphones.

Why do you need access to Motion and Fitness on my iPhone?

Motion and Fitness is the term Apple uses to describe your phone’s motion sensors. We do not measure your fitness activity. However, we do use your phone’s motion sensor to detect when you’re moving in a car. We also use this sensor to measure your driving events.

Why do you need access to my storage on my Android device?

This is how Android describes your phone’s motion sensors. We do not access your files or photos. We simply use your motion sensor to detect when you’re moving in a car.

How much of my data plan will be used with the app?

The Routely app is set up to use the least amount of data possible and will only upload the trip data at the end of a trip when the phone is connected to the internet through Wi-Fi or cellular.

How much battery will the app use?

While the app does continuously run in the background of your phone, it will only reduce your battery life while taking a trip. This would be similar to other navigation apps. Note that the app will not engage if the phone’s battery level is below 25% unless the phone is connected to a charger.

How do I opt out of SmartDrive?

You are free to remove the Routely app at any time. If you do so within the first 30 days of registering for the program, you will be deleted from the SmartDrive program entirely, but doing so will cause you to lose your participation discount. After 30 days, any data collected up to that point will still be available to us and may be used for future rating.
