National General SmartDrive – Custom Rates for Safe Drivers
What is SmartDrive?
SmartDrive is a unique program offered by National General Insurance that utilizes the Routely smartphone app to measure a customer’s driving behavior and reward drivers who exhibit good driving behavior with a more tailored insurance rate – allowing the best drivers to save!
The SmartDrive program allows National General to reward you with lower insurance premiums right from the start but the real savings kick in once you show how safe of a driver you really are!
Be a Smarter Driver, Save Money on Your Auto Insurance
When you sign up for the SmartDrive program, you receive an immediate participation discount of up to 5% on your personal auto premium. And, based on your driving behavior, you have the potential to get an additional 12% discount at renewal.
Perfect for Parents and Teen Drivers
Being a new driver can be exciting and scary for both the new driver and their parents. With National General’s new SmartDrive Program both parents and teenagers can feel a little safer and parents can ensure that their teens are practicing safe driving habits.
Here are some of the benefits:
- See driver’s monthly summaries
- See driver’s trip times
- See driver’s mileage, location, and driving events
How Does The SmartDrive Program Work?
There is no need to install any special equipment, instead simply install the Routely Report app on your smartphone to get started. The app will run in the background and utilize the smartphone’s sensors to automatically capture the following information during your trip:
- Phone Handling – Phone use can distract you and take your mind off the road.
- Speeding over 80 mph – Studies show the safest speeds are 80 mph and below.
- Sudden Braking – When your speed is greatly reduced in a short amount of time.
You can use the app to view your own recent trips and see how safely you drove. This immediate feedback can have a powerful effect on your behavior while behind the wheel.
Setup SmartDrive – Step-by-Step Instructions
- You will receive an email and a text message with an activation code for the app.
- Download the Routely Report app to your smartphone through the Google Play Store or Apple App Store.
- Enter the activation code and follow the in-app instructions to complete the registration.
- Take your first trip to complete the activation.
- Drive safely and save money on your car insurance
In order to keep the discount you must periodically take a trip. If you are not meeting the minimum requirements to keep the discount, National General will periodically send you a reminder via text.
If you go 30 consecutive days without logging a trip then you may have the participation discount removed. You can also have the discount removed if you fail to log at least 10 trips in the policy term.
At the first policy renewal after activation, the company should have enough data to generate a predictive score which will be used to adjust your renewal rate to more accurately reflect your actual driving behavior. This score will be applied to future renewals unless the company elects to collect additional driving data which can then be used to develop a new score.
The company requires at least 30 days of driving and approximately 125 trips to collect the data needed to calculate your driving score and apply it at the next renewal. Note that the driving score could potentially add a surcharge to the renewal rate based on your driving habits, but most often it gives a discount.
Can You Opt Out of SmartDrive?
Yes, you can opt out of the SmartDrive program. If you opt out within 30 days of signing up for the program, National General will simply remove the participation discount and not use any data or score generated in that time at the subsequent renewal.
If you opt out after 30 days, however, any data collected up to that point will remain available to the company for SmartDrive scoring purposes. If a valid SmartDrive score can be generated from the retained data, this score may be used to rate in the future.
