About Auburn, Washington
Auburn is located 20 miles south of Seattle in King County, with a small portion in Pierce County. Nestled in a fertile river valley near the original confluence of the Green and White rivers. The city is roughly bordered by the cities of Federal Way, Pacific, Algona to the west, Sumner to the south, unincorporated King County to the east, and Kent to the north. The Muckleshoot Indian Reservation is located within city limits.
Auburn has been both a farm community and a center of business and industry for more than 150 years. Settlers first arrived in the Green River Valley in the 1850s but were driven out by the Indian wars later that decade. Several settler families apprehensively returned to the area in the 1860s and twenty years later established the town of Slaughter, naming it for an officer slain during the Indian wars 30 years earlier.
Slaughter was incorporated in 1891 but the name was changed to Auburn two years later because newer residents were uncomfortable with the name, especially since the town’s hotel was referred to as the Slaughter House.
Auburn has transitioned from small farms to large industries yet much of the city’s history is visible. A monument in memory of Lieutenant Slaughter, which was erected in 1918, still stands in a local park. The Neely Mansion, built in 1891, has been refurbished and is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Even Auburn’s downtown maintains a “Main Street USA” appearance.
