What Is Non-Owner SR-22 Insurance?

Non-owner SR22 insurance is designed for persons who need to carry car insurance but don’t have regular access to a vehicle, either owned or non-owned. The drawback to a non-owner insurance policy is that it won’t provide liability coverage if you are driving a vehicle registered to you, a vehicle parked at your address, or a vehicle provided for your regular and/or frequent use.

Because Washington state also has a broadform named driver policy policy, which provides broader liability coverage, the only real use case for a non-owner policy is if you are going to keep your primary insurance in force to cover your real liability insurance needs and use the Non-Owner SR 22 Insurance just to handle your SR22 auto insurance requirement.

There really is no such thing as SR-22 insurance. It is just a shorthand way of saying you need an SR22 attached to your auto insurance coverage and an SR-22 is just the form filed with the state to prove you have current insurance, ie to verify your financial responsibility. The SR22 is added to your insurance policy, whether it is a non-owner insurance policy, a Broadform insurance policy, or a regular car insurance policy.

How Much Is Non-Owner SR 22 Insurance?

Non-owner SR22 insurance rates, like all insurance, will depend on your age, your driving record, your home address (zip code), and how much coverage you want. Adding the SR22 to the non-owner policy will usually add less than $5 per month to the insurance premium.

A non-owner policy will usually be the cheapest car insurance policy available because it rarely has to pay a claim since it is always secondary to the car owner’s insurance and the limitation on what cars you are actually covered to drive.

How Can I Get The Cheapest Non-Owner SR-22 Insurance?

The best way to get cheap non-owner SR-22 insurance quotes is to do what you would to find an affordable regular car insurance policy – compare rates from multiple insurance companies. Mid-Columbia Insurance can do the shopping for you and let you know which insurance company offers the best rates and options.

When Is Non-Owner SR22 Insurance Right For Me?

Usually a Broadform policy is a better choice if you don’t own a car but need SR22 insurance. Non-Owner SR-22 insurance should only be considered by those who:

  • Need an SR 22 filing,
  • Already have all the cars they drive covered by other insurance, and
  • Are not worried that the insurance and therefore the SR22 filing is not valid on most cars they are driving.

Yes, we can. If you don’t own a car but have incurred a major violation such as DUI or DWI, we can help you find an affordable, responsible way to satisfy the SR22 requirement. We can help you decide if a non-owner policy or a broadform policy is your best option and get your SR22 filed with the state so you can get back on the road.
