About Lakewood, Washington
Lakewood is the second-largest city in Pierce County and was officially incorporated in 1996. Historical names include, The Prairie, Tacoma/Lakewood Center and Lakes District.
Lakewood was originally called “The Prairie,” about 20 square miles with numerous small lakes. The area was home to the Steilacoom and Nisqually Indians prior to the arrival of European trappers and settlers.
The Hudson’s Bay Company built one of their fur trading posts, Fort Nisqually, here in 1833 because it was about halfway along the route from Vancouver, BC to the Columbia River.
Following Indian attacks on Fort Nisqually, the US Army built Fort Steilacoom in 1849 to serve as a military post to quell Indian uprisings as the number of settlers continued to increase.
The Tacoma Country and Golf Club, the first golf club west of the Mississippi, was established in 1894 to attract the rich and famous to the area and featured trolley transportation from Tacoma.
